Young leaders

Fantastic news! Youth Club has re-opened!

If you’re year 9 and above, the Gillingham Young Leaders programme is a great way to have fun and develop your leadership skills.

Young Leaders work with our professional youth workers and volunteers to run activities for young people in year 6 or 7.  Based at Gillingham Youth Club the sessions are lively, fun and varied.  You will help the young people to decide what activities they would like to see so one week you could be helping them to cook Bolognese whilst the following week you could be mask-making, running a 5-a-side football competition, or organising a chill out evening with pool and air hockey, board games and chat.

Everything you do as part of the Young Leaders programme will go towards an ASDAN Short Award in Leadership Skills. (ASDAN Qualifications are nationally recognised but don’t worry – there are no exams). There will be special training sessions through the year and you will get lots of help and support from the Youth Club Team.

Too young to get involved this year?

We will be recruiting new Young Leaders every year. Young leaders are normally recruited from youth club sessions – it really helps to know what it’s all about by being a club member yourself. So, if you’re Year 6 or 7 now, why not consider joining youth club now?

Who are the Young Leaders?

The Young Leaders programme is open to young people in Year 9 and above. You might be super-confident or you might want to develop your confidence. You might have experience of running activities for other people – or you might not. All we ask is that you are ready and willing to get involved, listen well and keen to learn to lead – and don’t worry, we’ll do everything we can to support you.

Who knows, you might even decide to go on and choose to work with young people as a career and take Level 2 and Level 3 youth work qualifications (we can help you with that), or join a new degree apprenticeship. You might even go on to join our team as a paid team member.

What will you gain from it?

  • Great fun
  • New friends
  • New experiences
  • A nationally recognised qualification – ASDAN’s Leadership Short Course
  • Great experience to put on your CV and UCAS applications
  • Skills that are really valued by employers – including team-working, problem-solving, organisational skills
